From the forest to the necklace: Identity and knowledge among Tsimane’ women

April 4, 2026

The seed necklaces made by Tsimane’ women are much more than aesthetic accessories. They are a living expression of identity, knowledge, and connection with nature, passed down from generation to generation. Within them, culture and environment are deeply intertwined: each seed holds a story, and each design reflects the work and creativity of a network of women.

In the photograph, Josefa shows us how she makes a necklace using the shishij seed (Siparuna thecaphora), which she collects in the forest. To do so, she walks long distances, recognizes the plants of the forest, and recollect the seeds with a skill that reflects a deep knowledge of the environment.

Like many Tsimane’ women, Josefa does not merely create necklaces; she also shares her knowledge with women of different generations, enabling them to learn together and strengthen their bonds, thereby keeping alive the relationship between culture and nature over time.
