Thanks to our partnership with the Tsimane’ Indigenous Women’s Organization (OMITS), we presented our photo exhibition “Cultura Viva: Saberes de la Amazonía en Imágenes” at the San Borja agricultural and artisan fair. Here, artisans and farmers from Tsimane’ and campesino communities showcase and sell their products, which include a wide variety of handicrafts, plantains, chocolate, seedlings, sweets, and much more.
The women of OMITS, along with their president, Delcia Cuata Guimo, and the gender secretary of the Tsimane’ Grand Council, Yesenia Cari Mayer, proposed displaying the photos alongside their handicrafts to give them the recognition they deserve. Yesenia and Delcia hope that, thanks to these photos, the people of San Borja will appreciate and value Tsimane’ knowledge and culture, which has been preserved across generations.
The fair and exhibition were a resounding success and attracted the attention of several local media outlets. Thanks to this exhibition and our collaboration with OMITS, we have been able to raise awareness and support the struggles of Tsimane’ women in the way they themselves decided and deemed appropriate. Furthermore, we spent a wonderful day together, during which we got to know each other a little better and learned a great deal about their culture and the valuable role women play in its preservation and adaptation over time.
