After days and weeks of long, in-depth discussions with Justina Canchi about the situation of women in Tsimane’ territory and their key role in a prosperous future, we have decided to support the women of the Maniqui River in creating an artisans’ association.
We were delighted to have Virginia Sánchez (Viqui) join us on our most recent trip up the river. Drawing on her professional expertise in managing and establishing sustainable associations, she led an informational workshop for the women explaining what an association is and how it can be useful. The interested women then decided to launch an association of saraij (shoulder bag) weavers. In the coming months, Viqui will provide training on governance and decision-making, production and sales finances, innovation, markets, and marketing.
The creation of this association will enable the women to become economically independent through an activity that respects nature and will support Justina’s efforts to empower Tsimane’ women.
