Amazonian Necklaces: Weaving Seeds Through Generations

April 2, 2026

Tsimane’ women have been creating handicrafts since ancient times. To do so, they have used a myriad of natural elements, such as plants, animals, and minerals.

In the case of their beautiful necklaces, Tsimane’ women—as well as other Amazonian peoples—use tree seeds, including wild seeds from the forests, as well as cultivated seeds from their gardens and chaco (small agricultural plots).

Although their forests are threatened by fires, excessive logging, and the expansion of cattle ranching (among other factors), the persistence of these creative processes over time demonstrates the resilience of the Tsimane’ people—and especially of the women who continue to weave their seeds and raise awareness about the importance of preserving their forests, rivers, territory, and culture.

Júlia Orrit, under the supervision of Mireia and Álvaro, will study the changes and continuities in the process of making necklaces, with an emphasis on the diversity and richness of the plant species behind them. Through our research, we aim to support the Tsimane’ women’s efforts to maintain their cultural practices and to spread awareness of the importance of plants, whose seeds not only give life but also embellish it.
