Juan Pablo Ticona Contreras holds a degree in Biology from the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA), Bolivia. He completed his undergraduate thesis, entitled “The Tsimane’: Knowledge and Use of Medicinal Plants in the Community of Tacuaral del Matos, Ballivián Province, Beni Department (Bolivia)”. He has received specialized training, including a diploma in Human Geography, Environmental Studies, and Climate Change. He also successfully completed the academic coursework and accreditation requirements of the Master’s Program in Geopolitics of Natural Resources, offered by the Department of Geographic Engineering at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. In addition, he acquired skills in first aid, pharmacology, and basic healthcare through the Bolivian Red Cross. Since 2009, Juan Pablo has worked as a field researcher and technical assistant at the Centro Boliviano de Investigación y Desarrollo Socio Integral (CBIDSI). In this role, he has participated in data collection and different research activities with several Indigenous communities across the Bolivian Amazon, contributing to projects on health, socioeconomic inequality, financial services, and environmental and social impacts in Indigenous territories such as TICH and TIM-1. He is fluent in both Spanish and Tsimane’ and has contributed as author and co-author to several publications and theses focused on ethnobotany and the oral histories of the Indigenous Peoples in the Beni region.
